First observed in 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated across the United States on the third Monday of January every year to honor the life and accomplishments of the civil-rights leader who worked relentlessly to achieve equality for people of all colors. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

Let’s take a look at all the services that will be open and closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is the second federal and state holiday of the year.

Retail

Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club and other major grocery stores will remain open. Working hours may, however, differ.

Financial services

The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ are closed on Monday. Most banks will also be closed. ATMs and online banking services will, however, be available to access.

FedEx and UPS

USPS won’t deliver mail but UPS and FedEx will deliver packages on Monday.

Restaurants 

Most restaurants will be open on Monday but hours may vary. Starbucks, however, sent an email to customers on Friday that some of its locations have shortened hours.

Educational Institutions 

Most schools, colleges and universities in the United States won’t hold classes on Monday.

Non-essential government offices and state and federal courthouses will be closed. Public libraries and city offices will also be closed on Monday.
