Far-right Matt Gaetz, a US representative, seems to be dreaming about being the country’s next attorney general.

In an interview with the right-wing network Newsmax on August 11, the Florida congressman and ardent supporter of Donald Trump said that he would be chosen to serve as US attorney general under a Trump administration.

Mr. Gaetz hinted that a future attorney general—possibly himself—could pursue criminal charges during a future administration while dismissing criticism of a failing Republican-led investigation into Hunter Biden.

“I don’t ascribe to the theory that we just have to surrender sending criminal referrals because somehow [Attorney General] Merrick Garland will never prosecute them,” Gaetz said in the Newsmax interview on Friday.

“For many of the crimes that we are observing, the statute of limitations is five years, and so we could send criminal referrals to the Department of Justice, we go take the White House back, and you never know, David, it may be an Attorney General Matt Gaetz down the road or someone of my liking who will be there to actually enforce the law and provide the accountability. Not just the vision, but the actual accountability.”

On Friday, Garland named a special counsel for the Hunter Biden inquiry. Republicans who don’t believe lawyer David Weiss will bring further charges as well as Hunter Biden’s attorneys reacted sceptically to the proposal.

Weiss oversaw a plea agreement that failed in recent weeks due to concerns about immunity. He has been looking into the younger Biden since 2018. He was appointed by the former president Trump. In the case, more charges are anticipated.

The credibility of an IRS whistleblower has been questioned in relation to a separate House probe investigating Hunter Biden’s business dealings in China and his tax returns. Democrats have referred to the inquiry as a “witch hunt.”

Gaetz acknowledged that it is doubtful that she would be chosen to oversee the Department of Justice.

“The world is not ready, probably,” he said. “Certainly Senate confirmation wouldn’t be, but you know, a boy can dream.”
