Multiple authorities responded to a large fire and explosion at an oil well site in New Town, North Dakota this afternoon. According to officials, four workers were injured in the incident.

One of the injured individuals required transportation by helicopter, while two were taken to a nearby hospital via ambulance. The remaining person was able to leave the scene with only minor injuries.

The well that caused the large explosion was brand new. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

Devon Energy, operator of the site, said “Devon’s priority is the safety of our employees, contractors and the protection of the environment. We are grateful for the quick response of the New Town Fire Department, who worked quickly to control the fire and secure the location. We are currently assessing the situation and determining next steps. As we learn more, we will share updated information.”

According to Mountrail County Sheriff Corey Bristol, a call regarding a fire at a well site along Highway 23B, roughly a quarter mile north of New Town, came in at around 10 a.m.

According to the sheriff, three tanks on the property caught fire.

Three other people received on-site treatment for minor injuries, according to Bristol, while one person had to be flown to Minot. The root cause is yet unknown.

The fire was largely out at of 11:30 a.m., according to Bristol.

The Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office, New Town Fire, as well as representatives from the Three Affiliated Tribes and MHA Emergency Operations, all sent crews to the scene.
