Lousiana’s Barksdale Air Force Base confirmed that a gas well explosion took place on the East Reservation of the base at around 11:40 am on Tuesday. Although a few injuries have been reported, the exact figure remains unknown for now.

In a news release, the Air Force said- “Although injuries have been reported, there are no further details at this time.”

According to a statement, emergency personnel responded to the scene at around 11:40 am. 

The investigation of the reason behind the explosion is currently underway.

First responders are currently on the scene. According to base officials, a news conference is in the works. 

“The safety of all those in our community is a top priority,” 2d Bomb Wing Base Commander Col Scott Weyermuller said in a statement.

“The swift response of our emergency management teams and our community partners played a critical role in minimizing the impact to the installation and local area,” the statement read. 

Earlier on Tuesday, Barksdale AFB shared an advisory that warned people residing near the base of demolitions that were set to happen from 10 am to 3 pm on the East Reservation. The base clarified that the planned demolitions did not contribute to the explosion in any way.

The advisory by the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office also informed residents in the area that they may hear a loud boom around noon.

The Barksdale Air Force Base has a populace of about 7,800 active duty and reservists, 7,700 family members, 2,150 civilian workers and 40,000 retirees.

Since 1933, the base has been popular in the local community for its annual airshow.
