The Pentagon, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, was under lockdown for close to two hours on Tuesday morning after multiple gunshots were reportedly fired near the facility’s Metro station.

In an initial tweet, Pentagon announced the facility was on lockdown due to “police activity.” 

“The Pentagon currently is on lock down due to an incident at the Pentagon Transit Center. We are asking the public to please avoid the area. More information will be forthcoming,” the tweet stated. 

An hour later, Pentagon tweeted that the lockdown has been lifted. 

“The Pentagon has lifted the lock down and has reopened. Corridor 2 and the Metro entrance remains closed. Corridor 3 is open for pedestrian traffic,” the tweet read.

Meanwhile, train services were temporarily halted in the area. 

Local reports had stated that Arlington County police and medic units were currently at the scene. 

At least three people, including a police officer, were reportedly injured in the shooting. Two of them were reportedly seriously injuries. 

It remained unclear if the suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
