Ron DeSantis has officially entered the race for 2024 presidential election, having officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. The Florida Governor posted a video on Twitter on Wednesday titled, “I’m running for president to lead our Great American Comeback.”
The announcement comes ahead of an event with Twitter owner Elon Musk on the site’s audio platform, Twitter Spaces.
It makes official a decision that had been widely anticipated ever since DeSantis’ reelection victory in November, when he captured the attention of a party eager to move past recent losses with a resounding victory. He enters the GOP presidential primary race for 2024 later than other candidates and after failing to deter more still from running, but he is better funded, more well-known, and polling higher than all but one: Donald Trump.

“Our border is a disaster, crime infests our cities, federal government makes it harder for families to make ends meet and the President flounders. But decline is a choice, success is attainable and freedom is worth fighting for. Righting the ship requires restoring sanity to our society, normalcy to our community and integrity to our institutions,” he said in the video. “Truth must be our foundation and common sense can no long be an uncommon virtue. In Florida we proved that it can be done. We chose facts over fears, education over indoctrination, law and order over rioting and disorder. We held the line when freedom hung in balance. We showed that we can and must revitalize America. We need the courage to lead and strength to win. I’m Ron DeSantis and I’m running to lead our Great American Comeback,” he added.
As governor of the Sunshine State, DeSantis, 44, has gained prominence for pushing a “anti-woke” agenda. This has included his highly publicized conflict with Disney over the latter’s opposition to Florida’s infamous Don’t Say Gay law.
DeSantis, who has 1.8 million Twitter followers, is emulating Trump by using Twitter for the announcement instead of a more traditional televised press conference. Trump has fully embraced social media as a primary communication channel. Prior to and during his time in the White House, Trump amassed a sizable Twitter following. He was later banned in 2021 for encouraging the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol attackers.
