A video of a large number of seals gathering along the coast of Monterey, California went viral over the weekend, sparking speculation that they ad an intuitive premonition of the impending arrival of Hurricane Hilary.

Hurricane Hilary is currently making it’s way northward and closer to southern California. The video before the hurricane made landfall showed hundreds of seals gathering on the coast as tourist and local residents flocked to take pictures of the rare sight.

The Monterey coast of California is known for its picturesque views. A compilation of videos captured the seals’ behaviors, as they moved or called out to their peers and navigated the changing currents and tides.

Hurricane Hilary has strengthened to a major category 4 storm with an extreme flash flood threat for the Pacific Northwest. According to National Weather Service San Diego, the hurricane in currently operating with the maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. The storm could bring “significant” impacts to Southern California and the Southwest by the weekend and into the first part of next week.

“Rainfall impacts from Hilary within the Southwestern United States are expected to peak this weekend into Monday,” the NHC said in an advisory. “Flash, urban and arroyo flooding is possible with the potential for significant impacts.”

Reports from Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, Mexico, have already painting a devastating picture as severe flash flooding has inundated the area. Videos going viral reveal the extent of the flooding brought on by the storm’s impact.

Meanwhile California Governor Gavin Newsom’s response to Hurricane Hilary is being closely scrutinized. Newsom has activated emergency measures and deployed resources in preparation for the storm. The magnitude of the flooding is yet to be seen.
