A stabbing incident occurred at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on a Wednesday night, involving three individuals, one of whom was an Atlanta police officer. According to the Atlanta Police Department, the incident unfolded at the south terminal of the airport, where the assailant targeted the victims. The suspect has been apprehended, and authorities have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
The injured police officer is reported to be a 71-year-old retired officer who had returned to the force, indicating the diverse range of individuals impacted by the incident. The incident was first reported to the police around 4:45 p.m., with the initial call concerning a woman armed with a knife in the vicinity of the west crossover within the terminal.
Before law enforcement could intervene, the woman stabbed a man, escalating the situation. Once officers arrived on the scene, they attempted to de-escalate the situation, urging the woman to drop the knife and isolating her from other travelers to minimize the risk to bystanders.
In the process of trying to communicate with the woman, she lashed out and stabbed both a fellow female traveler and an Atlanta Police Department lieutenant who was endeavoring to take her into custody. However, another officer managed to intervene, subduing and disarming the assailant before taking her into custody, thereby preventing further harm.
The identities and conditions of the victims have not yet been disclosed, but it was confirmed by authorities that they were all alert, conscious, and breathing when they were transported to the hospital. Conversely, the identity of the suspect has also not been revealed, and she did not sustain any injuries during the altercation.
Footage circulating on social media depicted passengers crouching down in the security line, with someone heard yelling in the background, illustrating the chaos and fear that unfolded at the airport.
