A line of storms that created numerous tornadoes Wednesday night across the north-central plains of Texas caused at least four fatalities and ten injuries. The community of Matador, which is about 70 northeast of Lubbock, Texas, was hardest hit.

Early on Thursday morning, the Lubbock Fire Department said that there were now four fatalities and ten more injuries. Seven of the injured were transferred by EMS to nearby hospitals, while three were driven there by private automobiles.

Despite the fact that there were three tornadoes along the line of storms on Wednesday evening, according to senior forecaster for the National Weather Service William Iwasko, only the one near Matador was able to inflict substantial damage.

The damage in Matador was called “horrific” by storm chasers on social media. At least 10 buildings were destroyed in the hamlet of Matador, according to the mayor, Pat Smith, who spoke to CBS News.

The tornado’s devastation was captured in photos and videos. What was once a Dollar General store was now a mass of wreckage, according to a video shared by KLBK’s Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley. Debris hung from the electrical lines that surrounded the store.

“Agencies from across the South Plains have assisted with search and rescue efforts,” the Lubbock Fire Department said on Facebook. “These agencies include police, fire, and emergency medical services.” State resources have arrived in Matador to start post-disaster operations, which include damage assessment and final recovery efforts.”
