The Charlottesville campus of the University of Virginia was put under lockdown late Sunday due to an active shooter situation on campus.

The university’s emergency management office said that a shooting took place on Culbreth Road. The suspect in the shooting is believed to be at large. 

Culbreth Road is on the north end of campus near the school’s theater.

A senior police officer for the University of Virginia confirmed that at least two people were critically wounded and possibly four total at the Culbreth Parking Garage. The suspect was also identified as Christopher Darnell Jones. 

Earlier, it was said that Bryan Sylva, a white male, was the shooter. However, the actual shooter’s identity was later confirmed to be Christopher Darnell Jones.

The suspect has been described as a Black male with a burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes. The suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous.

The university urged students, staff and nearby residents to continue sheltering in place until the situation was under control.
