United States Vice President Kamala Harris has delayed the plans for stopping over in California for campaigning in support of Gavin Newsom, the state’s governor who is up for elections soon, according to US media reports.

The announcements were made by the governor’s election campaigning staff on Thursday.

Newsom, who is a member of the Democratic party, was to be supported by the Vice President Harris. However, due to the evolving situation in Afghanistan, Harris will be going straight to Washington DC instead of making a stop in California, according to reports from NBC.

Jen Psaki, the White House Press Secretary, said earlier this week that United States President Joe Biden also has intentions to rally for Newsom in California. However, it is likely that those plans will be interrupted by the situation in war-torn Afghanistan, where at least 12 United States armed force officials were killed on Thursday.

California voters to decide whether to drive out Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom from office as a recall election has been scheduled on September 14 by the state’s Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis.

Newsom faced widespread backlash over state coronavirus orders that shuttered schools and businesses and upended life for millions of Californians.

Although he decried the recall bid as the work of anti-vaxxers and QAnon conspiracy theorists, Newsom enraged some including Republicans and small business owners with California’s strict and lengthy COVID restrictions.

A dozen members of the United States armed forces have been killed outside Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport on Thursday following a series of explosions. The incident has also claimed civilians lives.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Biden said that the “ISIS terrorists will not win“. He added, “We will respond with force and precision at our time, at the place we choose and the moment of our choosing”.
