Police are warning parents and children about a TikTok “gum challenge” involving chewing gum that contains the same active ingredient as pepper spray. At least 10 students were admitted to the hospital after they attempted TikTok’s new spicy gum challenge. On April 5, 2023, some students from Orange, Massachusetts’ Dexter Park Elementary School reacted to the gum brought during the break by another student.

On Wednesday, Southborough Police issued a Facebook warning after several students in Orange got sick after trying the challenge. Police have identified the product as CaJohns Trouble Bubble Bubble Gum.

What is the TikTok gum challenge?

The TikTok gum challenge was revived by Spice King Cameron Walker. His TikTok is full of videos, of trying the hottest foods available. He is a pro at eating zesty dishes and it seems like his palette was made for them.

In his TikTok video, Cameroon said, “The Trouble Bubble Challenge is 16 million Scoville units, and you have to chew it up long enough to blow a bubble”.

“Police level pepper spray is normally rated to one to two million Scoville heat units. This is a way to measure the amount of heat an individual feels when they come into contact,” police said in a statement.

“This gum is rated at 16 million Scoville Heat Units,” it added.

According to MassLive, some students at Dexter Park Elementary School purchased a pack of CaJohn’s Trouble Bubble gum and distributed it among other students. Due to its components, which make it more intolerable than even the spiciest peppers in the world. The gum has been advertised as “the hottest bubble gum on the planet.”

Police said if you use the gum then you should rinse and spit out the water immediately as many times as possible.

The gum challenge first gained popularity in 2021 when TikTok users posted videos of themselves consuming it. According to Insider, one Tiktoker said they had to eat ice cream for over 10 minutes after they stopped chewing the gum. Another student said that she threw up afterward.
