Andrea Campbell, a Democratic Party candidate, is running for election as Attorney General of Massachusetts. She is competing against Shannon Liss-Riordan in the primary elections. 

Andrea Campbell is leading with more than 73,000 votes, compared to around 56,000 votes for Shannon Liss-Riordan, according to the Associated Press.  

Andrea Campbell was a member of the Boston City Council in Massachusetts, representing District 4 and she assumed office in 2016.

Who is Andrea Campbell? 

Andrea Campbell was born on June 11, 1982, in Boston Massachusetts. She attended the Boston Latin School and graduated with a B.A degree from Princeton University. Later she also earned a Juris Doctor Degree from the UCLA School of Law. 

After earning her Juris degree, Andrea Campbell worked as an attorney for the EdLaw project. She also practiced law at Proskauer LLP as an employment attorney, and later she served the public as General Counsel at the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission. She worked across 101 cities and towns to address regional challenges like healthcare access, transportation, affordable housing, and climate change.

In 2015, Andrea Campbell successfully competed in the Boston City Council election and she became the first woman to represent District 4 on the Council with 61% votes. 

Her first piece of legislation was in the Community Preservation Act, which still generates over $20 million annually for new affordable housing and historical preservation. 

In 2018, she became the first black woman to be elected as the City Council President. As of January 2020, she served on four council committees: Community Preservation Act, Public Safety, Criminal Justice, Rules and Administration. She didn’t run for reelection in 2021 and on September 24, 2020, Campbell announced her candidacy in the 2021 Boston mayoral election in Roxbury.
