A carjacking suspect who was injured in a rolling shootout with authorities during a high-speed chase that made its way through several Southern California counties was identified by police on Saturday. Benjamin Gonzalez has a violent criminal history, Corona Police Department said in a statement, adding that he was wounded by gunfire and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Who is Benjamin Gonzalez?

Benjamin Gonzalez, a 44-year-old Los Angeles man remained in custody on Saturday after allegedly carjacking a vehicle in Corona and firing multiple shots at authorities during a dangerous pursuit that spanned three counties and ended with his arrest in Harbor City.

Gonzalez was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside and was being held on $1 million bail. He was charged with carjacking, assault with a firearm on a person, and evading a peace officer.

The incident started shortly before 3 pm Friday, when Corona police were contacted by the Ontario Police Department to assist with finding a vehicle believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run incident in Chino, according to Corona Police Department. Police located the suspected car and tried to conduct a traffic stop on Ontario Avenue in Corona. However, they did not pursue the vehicle due to the suspect’s dangerous driving and traffic conditions, authorities said.

With the support of helicopters from the Ontario and Riverside police departments, the suspect’s vehicle was located a short time later at a Shell gas station parking lot at 1550 E Ontario Avenue in Corona.

According to police, the suspect fled the gas station after he stole a 37-year-old Corona resident’s pickup truck with a rifle in hand and fired one round during the confrontation. The resident was not harmed.

A pursuit followed throughout Riverside County and Orange County and ultimately ended in Harbor City in Los Angeles. The suspect appeared to fire shots at law enforcement officers several times during the vehicle chase. The suspect was expected to be armed with a high-caliber, semiautomatic weapon.

Additional information on his criminal history was not immediately available. The Corona Police Department’s Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies involved with the pursuit.
