A gas tanker exploded in Frederic, Maryland, on Saturday, killing the driver.

Ron Snyder, the Public Information Officer of the Maryland State Police (MDSP) confirmed the death and added that no other injuries took place. CNN reports that nearby homes and vehicles were damaged in the fire.

Residents in the area were asked by city officials to avoid the area. Route 15 was also closed down, according to a tweet by MSDP. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

“Frederick County (MD) Fire & Rescue are on the scene of what appears to be a tanker explosion in the area of 15 and Rosemont Ave,” Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor said on Facebook.

“We are providing all available resources to assist with this incident. We will continue to support DFRS (Division of Fire & Rescue Services) as they lead incident control and clean-up. I implore all residents to avoid the area to allow DFRS to do their jobs and prevent any fire from spreading.”

Citizen Free Press is reporting that Hazmat crews are also in action at the scene.

The Twitter account TheCityofFrederickMD reported that some houses in the adjacent Apple Avenue are on fire. Other users, possibly locals, confirmed the news.

In a similar incident from July 2021 in Maryland, two gas tankers collided on a highway causing a massive explosion that killed both drivers and sent a fireball into the sky. The incident led to the closure of the interstate and prompted evacuations of nearby homes. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
