American comedian Bill Cosby’s sexual assault conviction was overturned on Wednesday. Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court, in a 79-page ruling, said, “Cosby’s convictions and judgment of sentence are vacated, and he is discharged. 

Cosby served more than two years at a state prison near Philadelphia after he was sentenced for an aggravated assault on his then-friend Andrea Constand at his mansion. It was the first guilty verdict for sexual assault against a celebrity since the advent of the #MeToo movement.

The 83-year-old was sentenced to 3-10-year imprisonment. He had vowed to serve all 10 years rather than acknowledge any remorse over the 2004 encounter with accuser Andrea Constand.

In May, Bill Cosby’s request for an early release was turned down by the Pennsylvania Parole Board after he did not agree to undergo a therapy programme for sexually violent predators.

Cosby was famous for his role on the sitcom TV series ‘The Cosby Show’.

Bill Cosby started his career as a stand-up comic in the 1960s. He then debuted on Television with a role in a show called ‘I Spy’. The show lead to Cosby starting his own sitcom ‘The Bill Cosby Show’, which ran for two seasons from 1969 to 1971. 

Cosby’s first prosecution ended in a mistrial in June 2017 after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. More than 60 women charged that they had been victims of sexual assault by Cosby. 

Cosby would’ve completed his first three years in prison on September 25 making him eligible for a parole request.
