A woman has been accused of having an illegal abortion in Nebraska at the age of 17 and then discarding the fetus, as reported by CNN.

The 19-year-old, identified as Celeste Burgess, received a 90-day prison sentence as part of a plea deal. As part of the legal agreement made in the case, the sentencing took place on Thursday.

Who is Celeste Burgess?

Celeste Burgess is 19 years old. She has been accused of having an illegal abortion at the age of 19 and discarding the fetus in Nebraska.

As per CNN report, In May, Celeste Burgess, a 19-year-old Norfolk, Nebraska resident, entered a plea of guilty to a felony charge of removing, hiding, or leaving a dead person’s body. False reporting and hiding death-related misdemeanor charges were dropped as part of the plea deal. The district court records for Nebraska’s Madison County show that these accusations were dropped. Burgess received a prison sentence as well as a two-year probationary period.

According to court records, Norfolk police started looking into Celeste Burgess and her mother, Jessica Burgess, in late April 2022 due to suspicions Celeste had given birth to a stillborn fetus.

An affidavit supporting a search request stated that Celeste Burgess first told detectives the fetus was delivered stillborn.

Authorities asserted that Celeste Burgess had a medical abortion, in violation of the state’s ban on abortions beyond 20 weeks, according to their allegations. Additionally, according to court records, Celeste Burgess was about 28 weeks along when her pregnancy ended.

The same accusations as her daughter was brought against 42-year-old Jessica Burgess, who was also charged with the felonies of executing an abortion beyond 20 weeks and acting as someone other than a licensed physician.

Jessica Burgess, Celeste Burgess’ mother, agreed to a plea deal earlier this month and admitted to removing, hiding, or abandoning a dead person and performing an abortion after 20 weeks. She also entered a guilty plea to the lesser offense of false reporting.
