Chad Brown, an award-winning horse race trainer, was arrested in upstate New York on Wednesday and charged with criminal obstruction of breathing, according to a police officer on Thursday morning.

Sgt. Paul Veitch, the Saratoga Springs Police Department’s public information officer, confirmed to Horse Racing Nation that Brown was arrested on Wednesday night. He stated that Brown was in custody and would be formally charged in Saratoga Springs City Court. Veitch did not say whether Brown would appear in court when it opened at 9 a.m. EDT.

Who is Chad Brown?

Chad C. Brown, born December 18, 1978, is an American Thoroughbred horse racing trainer known for his expertise with turf horses as well as fillies and mares.

Brown was born and raised in Mechanicville, a small town in upstate New York, and developed an interest in horses at a young age while visiting the nearby Saratoga race track with his family. He worked with Standardbreds at Saratoga Raceway while in high school. He worked as a summer intern for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey while studying animal science at Cornell University. Brown worked for McGaughey for a while after graduation before landing an internship with veterinarian Steve Allday.

Stacelita, Big Blue Kitten, Lady Eli, Flintshire, and Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar are among the ten Eclipse Award winners he has trained. After receiving the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in 2016, he won his first Triple Crown race in the 2017 Preakness Stakes with Cloud Computing. In addition, he received the Eclipse Award in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

In 2002, Brown started working for Hall of Fame trainer Robert Frankel as an assistant. When Frankel left the Breeders’ Cup in 2007 to care for his sick dog, Brown stepped in to fill the void and saddled Ginger Punch to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, which propelled Brown to widespread fame.

With only 10 horses in his stable five given by Ken and Sarah Ramsey and the remaining five by Gary and Mary West, Brown struck out on his own in November 2007. 

Stacelita’s training was taken over by Brown in 2011 after she had previously been located in Europe. On her route to winning the Eclipse Award for champion turf female, she triumphed under his guidance at the Beverly D. and Flower Bowl Invitational. Wins by Big Blue Kitten in the Sword Dancer Invitational and United Nations Handicap, as well as Real Solution in the Arlington Million, were among the highlights.

Brown took over the training of Juddmonte Farm’s Flintshire, who had previously campaigned for André Fabre, in 2016. Flintshire won the Manhattan Handicap in his first start for Brown. Brown won the trainer’s title for the Belmont spring/summer meet as a result of the victory.

Brown won his 1,000th career race at Saratoga on August 24 with Mr Maybe. Brown’s stable set a North American record for earnings in 2019 with $31,112,144.
