Daniel Milton Newhouse was born on July 10, 1955 in Sunnyside, East of Yakima. His father Irv Newhouse came from a Dutch household. His parents, as well as all of his siblings, are Washington State University graduates. His father served in the Washington State House and Senate for 34 years, retiring in 1998. In 1977, Newhouse earned a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics from Washington State. He is a Washington Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Program graduate as well. He belonged to the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity in college. He is a member of the Republican Party.
From 2003 until 2009, Newhouse served four terms in the Washington House of Representatives, representing his father’s old district, the 15th, in eastern Yakima County. Newhouse was nominated to lead the Washington State Department of Agriculture in 2009 by Christine Gregoire, who was the state’s governor at the time.
After the incumbent Doc Hastings, decided not to run, Newhouse entered the Republican primary for Washington’s 4th congressional district in February 2014. Given that the 4th has historically been the most conservative in Washington, it was almost certain that another Republican would take his place.
On January 13, 2021, Newhouse made public his support for Donald Trump’s second impeachment following the storming of the US Capitol. On that particular day, he and nine other Republicans voted to impeach. On May 19, 2021, Newhouse joined the 35 Democrats and independents who voted in favour of legislation establishing the January 6 panel intended to look into the Capitol storming.
On July 19, 2022, Newhouse voted in favour of the Respect for Marriage Act, which would have enshrined the right to same-sex unions in federal law, along with 46 other Republican Representatives. Newhouse voted to give the Ukrainian government roughly $14 billion in 2022.
The U.S. primaries for Arizona, Michigan, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, and Washington are set to be held on August 2, 2022. The mid-term elections are slated for November 8.
