A new state legislation that permits victims of sexual violence to file lawsuits over assaults that happened decades ago went into effect minutes before E. Jean Carroll, a writer who accused former President Donald Trump of rape, filed an updated case against him on Thursday in New York.

Because the Adult Survivor’s Act temporarily waived the state’s customary deadlines for suing for sexual assault, Carroll’s attorney electronically filed the court documents. She demanded undefined compensatory and punitive damages for reputational harm, psychological harm, loss of dignity, and pain and suffering.

In a book published in 2019, Carroll, a longstanding Elle magazine advice columnist, claimed for the first time that Trump had raped her in a changing room at a high-end Manhattan department store in 1995 or 1996.
