A hostage crisis and shootout Thursday afternoon killed one individual and injured another and a California Highway Patrol officer. Eric James Abril has been named as the shootout suspect.
Who is Eric James Abril?
Born in 1988, Eric James Abril is the suspect of the Roseville’s Mahany Park that took place in March 2023. Abril shot 2 hostages and a California Highway Patrol officer.
According to a California Highway Patrol official, an officer was shot around 12:30 p.m on April 7, 2023 near Mahany Park while executing a search warrant as part of an ongoing felony investigation. Officers present at the scene exchanged firearms.
According to the CHP, there were seven officers there at the time, and it’s unclear how many of them actually fired their weapons.
A second gunfight between Roseville and CHP officers as well as the shooter occurred after the CHP officer was shot, according to the Roseville Police Department.
A CHP task force officer reported shots fired at roughly 12:30 p.m., and a CHP officer executing a warrant was hit, according to Roseville Police Capt. Kelby Newton.
The CHP officer was brought into the station by firefighters from Station 5 in the neighborhood, where he received medical attention before being sent to the hospital. When other police officers arrived on the scene, Abril confronted them while still brandishing a revolver and fleeing from them.

Police said Abril held two persons hostage, and after a shootout with them, he was wounded and taken into custody.
Between the officer’s shooting and the arrest of Abril, two additional people were shot; one of them, later identified as James MacEgan, died at the site. The CHP officer was later discharged from the hospital, and according to city officials, the other hostage was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
