Huu Can Tran has been identified as the suspect in Monterey Park shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said in a news conference. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing 10 people and injuring 10 others.

The mass shooting in Los Angeles, California took place on Saturday January 21, 2023, at approximately 10:22 PM., according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It occured near a Lunar New Year festival celebration” in the Chinese community, CNN reported. The release gave the location at 100 blk. W. Garvey Ave., Monterey Park.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said no other suspects were at large. He added that the motive was still not known. The age of the victims is not known. Seven of wounded people are still in the hospital, he added.

Luna, in the press conference, said that Tran was carrying a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine. A second handgun was found in the van where the suspect was dead.

Congresswoman Judy Chu said, “What was the motive for this shooter? Did he have a mental illness? Was he a domestic violence abuser? How did he gets these guns and was it through legal means or not?”

Who is Huu Can Tran, Monterey Park, Los Angeles, California shooting suspect identified?

Huu Can Tran was 72 years old, the sheriff said. He died inside a cargo van after a standoff with the police in Torrance, California, Luna said. As per officers, he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Law enforcement sources told CNN that the suspect may have sought medical treatment shortly before his capture.
