Former President Donald Trump participated in a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Saturday night in endorsement of Republican Senate Candidate J.D. Vance, with less than 50 days until the midterm elections in November.

One of the guest speakers was Republican Senate Candidate J.D. Vance, who is running against Democrat Tim Ryan in a race that could establish which political party controls the Senate next year.

Jim Jordan, the representative for Ohio’s 4th congressional district, was also present at the rally. Trump in his speech said, “Jim Jordan is very special to me.”

Who is Jim Jordan? 

James Daniel Jordan born on February 17, 1964, is an American politician who has served in the 4th congressional district of Ohio since 2007. His district includes Lima, Marion, Tiffin, Norwalk, and Elyria and stretches from Lake Erie to just below Urbana in north-central and western Ohio. Jordan, a Republican, is a former collegiate wrestler and college wrestling coach.

Jordan is a foundational member of the House Freedom Caucus, having served as its first chair from 2015 to 2017, and as its vice chair since 2017. From 2019 to 2020, he was the leaderboard member of the House Oversight Committee. He resigned to become the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee.

Jordan is a close confidant of former President Donald Trump. During Trump’s presidency, Jordan attempted to delegitimize investigations into Russian election meddling in 2016 and scripted a sit-in to thwart a Trump impeachment inquiry hearing over the Trump-Ukraine scandal.

Jordan endorsed lawsuits to invalidate the election results and voted not to certify the Electoral College results after Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and Trump refused to concede while making false claims of fraud. He declined to cooperate with the US House Select Committee on January 6, 2021 attack, which subpoenaed him on May 12, 2022.

Jordan grew up in Champaign County, Ohio, as the son of Shirley and John Jordan. He went to Graham High School and wrestled for them, graduating in 1982. He won state titles all four years of high school and had a 156-1 win-loss record. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he won two NCAA Division I wrestling championships.

Jordan won the 134-pound (61 kg) weight class at the NCAA championships in 1985 and 1986. In 1986, he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. At the 1988 US Olympic wrestling trials, he lost the 126-137-pound (57-62 kg) featherweight semifinal match and did not make the Olympic team.

Jordan holds a master’s degree in education from Ohio State University as well as a Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School. Jordan stated in a 2018 interview that he never took the bar exam.

Jordan and his wife Polly live in central Champaign County, near Urbana. Jordan met them through her brothers, with whom she competed in wrestling. Polly and Jordan began dating at the ages of 13 and 14, respectively. They are the parents of four children and grandparents to two grandchildren. Jarrod Uthoff, Jordan’s son-in-law, is a professional basketball player.
