A suspect, identified as Jonathan Kassi, has been arrested by police in California in connection with an alleged online scam, which authorities say led to the suicide death of a 17-year-old boy.

The 25-year-old suspect was taken into custody Thursday by Los Angeles police officers on an arrest warrant, the San Jose Police Department announced Monday.

The San Jose Crimes Against Children Task Force, which was investigating a West African financial extortion scheme, obtained the warrant.

Kassi was transferred from Los Angeles to Northern California and “booked for extortion and attempted disorderly conduct – posting of a photograph or recording without consent,” San Jose police said. According to reports, Kassi is a native of Reseda, California.

In February, a teenager – identified as Ryan Last – died by suicide after he was became he target of an online scam known as “sextortion.”

The victim’s mother, Pauline Stuart, told media that police determined her son was contacted online by someone purporting to be a girl. Ryan engaged in an online conversation with the person he thought to be a girl and their acquaintance turned intimate in nature.

Police said that the person sent Ryan a romantic picture of a young female and asked for one of him in return. After Ryan shared an intimate photo of his own, the person demanded $5,000, threatening to make the photo public and send it to Ryan’s family and friends. Investigators said that hours after the threat, Ryan killed himself.

While San Jose police withheld Ryan’s name as the minor victim linked in the arrest Monday, his mother confirmed to CNN the arrest was in connection with her son’s death.

“I am truly disgusted that there are people that can do this to kids, but I am also grateful for all the work that law enforcement has done on this case,” she told CNN Monday evening. “They truly care what happens and have worked hard investigating. I believe that to continue to fight these type of scams we need to educate parents and kids alike.”

The San Jose Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force  believe there could be more victims based on Kassi’s criminal pattern, police said.

“Any time you do anything online, there’s a trail,” said Christian Camarillo of the SJPD. “Our detectives are very good at what they do. That trail led us to this person who we located in Los Angeles and today he’s getting arraigned in our courts.”
