Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) used a Jeopardy-style prop to quiz witnesses on DOD waste and the lack of financial accountability at a hearing on Thursday.

Porter engaged the witnesses by giving them a variety of subjects to choose from during the hearing. The solution to one of these questions, “enablers,” was “Individuals who profit while advocating excessive spending of taxpayers’ money.” It was followed by the query, “Who are defense lobbyists?” Porter also emphasized other significant instances of wasteful behavior inside the DOD in addition to the infamous F-35 program, which has been over budget for ten years.

Who is Katie Porter?

Katherine Moore Porter, aged 49, is an esteemed American politician, law professor, and attorney. Following her former representation of the 45th congressional district from 2019 to 2023, she has been the United States Representative for California’s 47th congressional district since 2023. 

She made history as the first Democrat elected to represent the 45th district, which encompasses a significant portion of south-central Orange County, including Irvine, Tustin, and Lake Forest, as well as substantial sections of Anaheim and Laguna Niguel. Porter won reelection in 2022 in the recently redrew 47th congressional district because of her hard work and broad public support.

Porter continued her education at Yale University after graduating from Phillips Academy. She successfully completed her degree in American Studies in 1996. She continued her education by enrolling in Harvard Law School, where she assumed duties, including notes editor for the Harvard Women’s Law Journal.

Porter rose to prominence during President Trump’s administration for her distinctive strategy of asking incisive questions to politicians and corporate executives at congressional hearings. She frequently used visual aids, such as whiteboards, to support her questions and better illustrate her arguments.

She became one of the first Democrats from a swing district to support an impeachment investigation. She made her choice in light of the Special Counsel investigation’s conclusions, which were conducted by Robert Mueller.
