Sam Brinton, a non-binary person who was serving as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has been fired from their position after several reports of them stealing luggage have come to light. 

The Daily Beast was informed by a spokesperson of the DOE, “Sam Brinton is no longer a DOE employee. By law, the Department of Energy cannot comment further on personnel matters.”

There have been two reports of theft against Brinton. They stole a suitcase that belonged to a woman from an airport in Minneapolis, and a bag from the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas that contained jewellery reportedly worth $3,500.

Who is Sam Brinton?

Sam Brinton, the recently fired employee of the US Department of Energy, has pursued his studies from Kansas State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

At KSU, Brinton studied Mechanical Engineering with Nuclear Engineering Option, and at MIT, they studied Dual Master of Science, Nuclear Engineering, Technology, and Policy.

Brinton joined the Bipartisan Policy Center in 2015 as a Senior Policy Analyst. They then founded a company called Core Solutions Consulting to provide technology-based solutions.

They joined the Trevor Project in 2017 as the Head of Advocacy and Government Affairs and also served in the role of Vice President of Advocacy and Government Affairs.

Brinton has also been a part of Deep Isolation, a political affairs team, where they served as Director of Legislative Affairs and a Director of Policy Strategy.

They became an employee of the DOE in June 2022. After the accusations were levelled against him for the first time, Brinton was sent on leave. Exchange Monitor, a watchdog that tracks government officials’ moves, has revealed that an interim replacement had been hired for Brinton.

Brinton is currently married to Kevin Rieck.
