Stephanie Haskins made history last year after she undergo gender transition surgery at an older age, becoming America’s one of the oldest known people to do so.

Who is Stephanie Haskins?

Stephanie Haskins is 76 years old. Haskins was known throughout her life as Steve Haskins, an established figure in the broadcast news sector who worked for renowned sources such as KCRA. She later moved on to become a state political spokeswoman. Despite her accomplishments, Haskins struggled with a strong sense of uneasiness in her body.

Haskins began a remarkable journey at the age of 76, becoming one of the oldest people known to have undergone gender confirmation surgery. Her one-of-a-kind experience, as well as her prior life, have been documented in a documentary titled “Never Too Late?” created by Joyce Mitchell, a former KCRA colleague.

Before her transition, Haskins affirmed that she used to drink excessively and rely on drugs to cope with her emotional issues. She admitted to feeling frustrated when she wakes up each morning.

In her documentary, a critical moment in the video captures Haskins soon after her most significant treatment to date—a vaginoplasty, a surgical intervention to build a vagina. At this vulnerable juncture, she is asked a probing question: “What would ‘Steve’ say if he saw her today?”

She said, “I’m incredibly proud of you, and I’m so glad that you found my body and our souls are identical.”

Haskins in her documentary reacting to all the backlash and criticism said, “I think it is important for people to know that we are not these body mutilators, we are not perverts.”

‘We are not any different from who they are, who their relatives are, who their kids are, we’re just a little bit not quite the same.”

“If you know just on the surface that I am a transgender woman, then you know how much I have given up for that, how much I have suffered, and by God, you’d better respect me enough to call me by my name.”
