Angel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza, a migrant teenager who arrived unaccompanied in the United States from Honduras has died in government custody. The boy died at a shelter facility in Florida. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) did not mention the cause of death. This was the second such death in two months.

Who was Angel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza?

Enrique Reina, the Honduran secretary of foreign affairs, identified the boy as Angel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza. He called for a detailed investigation into his death. He was 17 years old.

Espinoza was in Safety Harbor, Florida, which is the site of a shelter used to house unaccompanied children.

There was no altercation of any king involved in the death, a US official said, reported CBS News.

Bill Pellan, director of investigations for the District Six Medical Examiner Officer, said that his office and the local sheriff’s office are investigating the death of a boy who died at East Countryside Hospital. A cause of death has yet to be confirmed, Pellan said.

Espinoza was taken to the hospital on Wednesday morning after being found unconscious and was declared dead an hour later, shortly after 9 am. The teenager was said to have been in custody for five days before his death.

Norma Sarai, Espinoza’s mother said he “wanted to live the American Dream.”

“He told me he was in a shelter and not to worry because he was in the best hands. We only spoke for two minutes, I told him goodbye and wished him the best,” she said, reported BBC.

In March this year, a 4-year-child from Honduras in HHS custody died after being admitted to a hospital for cardiac arrest in Michigan.

According to a CBS report, six migrant children, some with health issues, were known to have died in 2019, either after being detained by border patrol or after being released by HHS to a hospital.
