The Mercer University community is in deep sorrow over the passing of one of its own. According to sources, Baba Agbaje, 21, was found dead, and the cause of death is under investigation. According to authorities, he passed away on Monday after going into cardiac arrest while participating in a pickup football game.

The news was shared by the university in Macon, Georgia.

Who was Baba Agbaje?

Baba Agbaje was a 21-year-old Mercer University student who died on Monday, April 11. Baba was enrolled in the Stetson-Hatcher School of Business and had previously played football for the university.

Agbaje allegedly fainted and suffered a heart attack while participating in a pick-up soccer match. The 21-year-old was rushed to the emergency room that evening but ultimately died. After being taken to Atrium Health Navicent, he was declared dead at 7:48 in the evening.

According to his high school coach, Baba Agbaje’s most notable quality was that he was widely loved. “Every teacher he ever had, every person he ever had contact with, just thought ‘This is a great human being.’ Unselfish, loved life, always positive.” Bunky Colvin. “Baba was a person that everybody cheered for, no matter what,” Colvin added.

At McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, Colvin served as the boys’ football coach and a teacher in addition to coaching and instructing Agbaje.

“We’re heartbroken over Baba’s passing, and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones,” men’s soccer head coach Brad Ruzzo said. “He was an incredible person who embodied what it means to be a Mercer Bear. Everyone who knew Baba loved him, and he was a blessing to coach. He will be greatly missed,” Ruzzo added.

This unexpected loss has saddened Baba’s teammates and coaches. Together with other classmates, they gathered at the memorial to support Baba’s family. Moreover, he was named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll from 2020 to 2022.
