A suspect, Daton Viel, severely injured two police officers in downtown Orlando in a fatal shooting on Friday night. The suspect was shot dead by the SWAT team, confirmed by Orlando Police.

A SWAT team killed the suspected shooter in the incident in a gunfight on Saturday morning.

Who was Daton Viel?

Daton Viel was 28 years old. The alleged shooter was killed in a shootout that took place between SWAT team members and him. At 6 a.m., the Holiday Inn on Caravan Court, where the suspect, 28-year-old Daton Viel, had barricaded himself in a room, was evacuated as a result of the incident. The situation worsened as he repeatedly refused to surrender despite multiple attempts to convince him to do so.

The officers were shot and wounded on Friday at 11 p.m. while looking into a car connected to a Miami homicide case driven by Daton Viel. Michael Williams was shot and murdered in a shooting on July 10 at 1:40 p.m., according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The Miami-Dade police were able to locate a vehicle linked to the previous crime using security footage, and it was later found in Orlando on Friday night. The Orlando police then carried on with their investigation. Viel allegedly fired shots at the officers while they were conducting their investigation, which resulted in a carjacking as he tried to escape in a different vehicle.

Earlier this year, Viel was arrested after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. He was out on a bond.

Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer in a statement said, “To those officers and their families who I had an opportunity to meet with earlier today, I want to thank them for their service and dedication to our city. They put their lives on the line every single day to keep our community safe.”
