A Pea Ridge, Arkansas police officer, Kevin Apple, was run over by a car on Saturday while pursuing two people. The 23-year veteran died on the spot, local media reported.

Apple was with Pea Ridge for three years. A vehicle ran him over and dragged him as he approached to speak to its occupants, North West Arkansas Democratic Gazette reported. The incident took place around 11:30 AM.

The vehicle occupants, Shawna Rhae Cash, 22, and Elijah Andazola Sr., 18, were arrested and face multiple charges.

“Our department is in shock right now. We are a hometown and everyone in our Police Department are family, and so we ask that you give us and our family some space. Give us some patience and time and we do appreciate your support,”  Pea Ridge police said in a statement.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Pea Ridge police officer Kevin Apple. My prayers are with Officer Apple’s family and the entire Pea Ridge community during this time. I have ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in tribute to Officer Apple,” Asa Hutchinson, Governor of Arkansas said.
