Clashes between the Israeli police and Palestinians broke out at the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. While medics had initially estimated around 59 people had been injured, the number climbed to 153 with time.
Commenting on the incident, Israel’s foreign minister Yair Lapid said, “The convergence of Passover, Ramadan and Easter is symbolic of what we have in common. We must not let anyone turn these holy days into a platform for hate, incitement and violence”, and added riots in Jerusalem weren’t acceptable.
This mosque is the third holiest site in all of Islam. It is built on a hilltop which happens to be very sacred to the Jews and is referred to as Temple Mount.

The mosque has seen violence previously too, in 2021, when Ofir Gendelman, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted, “Extremist Palestinians planned well in advance to carry out riots today on the Temple Mount”, adding, “What we see now is the result of that.”
The police had quickly dispatched officers to keep the peace.
While Israel wants all of Jerusalem, including the east which it annexed in a move that’s not been globally recognized, the Palestinians want East Jerusalem to form the capital of the state they seek in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

In recent times, tensions have soared again after Palestine launched an attack killing 14 inside Israel. In response, Israel has carried out arrests and military operations in the now-occupied West Bank, which have left many Palestinians dead.
