The World Biofuel Day is celebrated on August 10 every year. As global warming continues to take its toll on our lives, the World Biofuel Day is a reminder to use fuel made from animal or plant waste. Such fuels are safer than fossil fuels since they do not produce harmful gases like carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide when burnt. It was from the year 2015 that India, under the guidance of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, began to celebrate World Biofuel Day.
August 10 has been chosen as the World Biofuel Day because it was on this day in 1893 that the diesel engine’s inventor, Sir Rudolph Diesel, had first managed to run a mechanical engine using oil made from peanuts. This was the first time that a sustainable biofuel was used for running a motor instead of fossil fuel.
In keeping with the World Biofuel Day celebrations, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated a 2nd Generation of Ethanol Generation Plant at Indian Oil Corporation Limited in Haryana’s Panipat Refinery. The plant was built using Rs. 999 crores and is expected to convert 2 lakh tonnes of rice straw into 3 Crore litres of ethanol every year. The burning of rice straw contributes to air pollution in some north Indian states like Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. Now farmers will be able to earn by selling their rice straws to this refinery, which will then turn the same into sustainable fuel.
