John Mcafee is not just the founder of Mcafee antivirus but led an eccentric life towards the end, which is comparable to what was seen in Apocalypse Now, when Colonel Kurtz remained cooped up in his stronghold.
When Mcafee was at his peak, the innovator was estimated to be worth $100 million, but he always had a wild side, recounting his drug-fuelled days before his breakthrough with the antivirus – which became among the most popular and most hated in the world. However, Mcafee had to give all that up and go on the lam when his neighbour was murdered.
He spent time in a guarded forest compound and was always larger than life, often indulging in Russian roulette. The documentary explores how Mcafee tried to outrun authorities, and tells the story of a man who once ran for president, claimed to have broken out of prisons, and even hacked the entire world.
During an interview with Wired, Mcafee put a gun to his head and kept pulling the trigger incessantly, saying “I can do this a thousand times. Ten thousand times. Nothing will ever happen. Why? Because you have missed something. You are operating on an assumption about reality that is wrong”, which gives a glimpse into how the man looked at life.
He died by suicide in a Spanish prison in June 2021.
