Alsatian Wolf dog

Answer: Alsatian Wolf dog

The German Shepherd is a dog breed of a medium to a large-sized dog with roots in Germany. It was officially named the Alsatian Wolf dog in the United Kingdom during the First World War. Despite looking like a wolf, the Alsatian Wolf dog is a comparatively modern dog breed that first originated in 1899.

Categorized as working dogs, Alsatian Wolf dogs were originally used for herding cattle and sheep. However, due to their cognitive abilities, obedience, strength and trainability, Alsatian Wolf dogs across the world are used for several types of work such as search and rescue, assisting the disabled, military roles, police roles and acting.

The breed originated in Germany when an officer of the German military, Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz, felt the need to develop a unique breed.

He then promoted the breed across Germany. Soon enough, Alsatian Wolf dogs became common in Germany and thousands were used during World War I.

The British Kennel Club decided to name the dog ‘Alsatian’ as some of the first dogs from this breed were brought to Great Britain from Alsace, a region in France that borders Germany.
