Snapchat is one of
the world’s most popular social media services.
As of January 2020,
the service has 360 million monthly active users, with three billion “snaps”
(pictures and videos) being created every day.
Snapchat was established in 2011 by Stanford
University students Evan Spiegel, Reggie Brown, and Bobby Murphy.
According to
reports, Brown came up with the concept for a social networking app that
allowed users to submit images and videos that vanished after a few seconds.
Brown is said to
have pitched the idea to Spiegel, and the two agreed that a social networking
site based on vanishing material was a good idea. Bobby Murphy was then
recruited by the pair to create the app’s programming.
The co-founders debuted “Picaboo,” the predecessor
of Snapchat, in July of 2011. After forcing Brown out of the firm, Spiegel and
Murphy renamed it Snapchat and relaunched it in September 2011.
At the time, both Stanford University students were in their junior year
of college. In September of 2014, Brown reached a $157 million settlement with
the two co-founders. He was also named as a co-founder of Snapchat by the
company.
With a blank slate and an innovative business idea, Spiegel (now the
firm’s CEO) and Murphy set out to develop the company from the ground up.
