Dimitar Kovacevski was elected Prime Minister of North Macedonia in January, 2022. An economist by profession, Kovacevski is a member of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia. He served as the country’s deputy finance minister from 2020 until his appointment as PM in 2022. 

When he was appointed Prime Minister, Kovacevski said his government will focus on economic growth, addressing the country’s energy crisis, and advancing North Macedonia’s bid for European Union membership. 

Macedonia added North to its official name in 2019 after resolving a dispute with Greece that let the country enter North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). However, Bulgaria has blocked the opening of the EU accession negotiation due to dispute of historical and language issues.
