Born in 1959, Xiaomara Castro is a Honduran politician known for becoming the first female president of the country.
Castro was elected the 56th President of Honduras in January 2022, and became the first person to assume the role without being a member of either the Liberal Party or the National Party since the restoration of democracy in the country in 1982.
Castro represented the left-wing Libre Party in 2013, 2017, and in the 2021 Honduran general elections.
She was also the country’s first lady when her husband Manuel Zelaya was the president between 2006 and 2009, and was among the leaders of the movement resisting the 2009 coup d’état against her husband.
