South Korean subscription company and broadcaster JTBC hit
back at claims of distortion of history by releasing a portion of their
upcoming drama show ‘Snowdrop’ on Tuesday. The drama series is scheduled to release
in the second half of 2021, and features actor Jung Hae-in as well as Jisoo,
band member of Blackpink.

Many suspected that the plot was centered around a North
Korean spy and the South Korean pro-democracy movement that took place in the
1980s, with the popular opinion being that North Korea played no part in the pro-Democracy
movements, as well as claims of the series belittling the movement, as per a
report by The Korea Herald.

Amidst opposition to the production rising steadily among
the public, JTBC attempted to clear up the issue with a longer statement on Tuesday,
after denying claims of glorification of North Korean spies last week.

“The current controversies stem from combining fragmented
information from an incomplete synopsis and character introductions that were
leaked online. Suspicion has been added to fragmented information, making false
information seem true,” The Korea Herald quoted the broadcaster as saying
regarding the matter.

The drama, centred around 1987 Presidential elections in
South Korea, narrates the connection between the-then ruling military regime and
the ANSP (currently the National Intelligence Service), who were in power in
South Korea at the time, conspiring with North Korea to maintain the status quo
in the country.

JTBC, however, claimed that the drama does not revolve around
the pro-democracy movement and that the script contains no references to main
characters who participated in the movement.
