Daft Punk, the French Grammy-winning duo, announced their split on Monday with a dramatic 8-minute video they called “Epilogue”. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were Daft Punk for 28 years, dressed robot-like in shiny helmets for many of those years. The reclusive duo brought French underground house to the mainstream and composed some of the most influential dance music of all times.
Daft Punk is all the buzz right now, with fans mourning the split on social media with messages of “RIP” and “Nooooooo” and “Thank you for the music.”
Here are 7 quick facts that will help you hold your own in a Daft Punk conversation.
1) Parisians Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were school buddies who first formed a band called Darlin’ in 1992, named after a song by The Beach Boys.
2) Darlin’ wound up pretty soon, but not before it had earned a bad review by a critic who called the band “daft punky thrash.” Daft Punk was born in 1993, the name inspired by that epithet.
3) Daft Punk didn’t wear those defining robot costumes in their public appearances in the early years. That began after their second album Discovery in 2001.
4) Stuart Discotheque or Disco Stu, the flashy owner of a club on the Simpsons, wore a Daft Punk helmet in an episode called ‘The Day The Earth Stood Cool’.
5) Daft Punk composed the score for the Disney film Tron: Legacy in 2010.
6) Daft Punk made their first televised live performance in 2008 with a surprise appearance with Kanye West performing his “Stronger”.
7) All fan sites list this, so it’s worth talking about. The story goes that David Bowie made a phonecall to Daft Punk at their studio asking them to remix one of his songs. The legend goes that they said no.
