A massive undersea volcanic eruption in the island nation of Tonga, which could be heard as far away as New Zealand and Australia, sent a tsunami across the Pacific. The eruption left the outer islands in the nation devastated, destroying entire settlements in its wake, and disrupting communications with the outside world. However, despite the widespread destruction of property, Tonga managed to avoid disaster and only three deaths have been reported thus far. Efforts are currently underway to get much needed medical supplies and drinking water to the South Pacific country, but efforts are progressing slowly as the eruption has disrupted flight and sea routes.
