Inter Milan won their 19th Serie A title after Atalanta were held 1-1 at Sassuolo on Sunday. The title is Inter’s first since 2010 and breaks Juventus’ nine-year consecutive title winning run.

Antonio Conte’s men won 2-0 against Crotone on Saturday to move 13 points clear of second-placed Atalanta, needing the Bergamo-based club to only drop points to be confirmed champions.

Robin Gosens put Atalanta in front after goalkeeper Perluigi Gollini was sent off at the 22-minute mark, but a Dominic Berardi penalty saw the home side level the score. However, Marlon Santos gave Atalanta a chance to restore their lead, conceding a penalty with a second bookable offence in the box.

But Luis Muriel failed to convert, with the draw securing the title for Inter Milan. Juventus, who had won every title from the 2010-11 season, are now facing the prospect of missing out on Champions League football with Andrea Pirlo’s men currently occuping fifth spot, a point behing Napoli with a game in hand.

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli congratulated his Inter counterpart Steven Zhang on the Chinese-owned club’s success.

“Well done Steven! Happy for you and proud of being your loyal opponent on the pitch and friend off the pitch. We’ll be back,” Agnelli wrote on Twitter.

The title win further bolsters Antonio Conte’s credentials as one of the world’s best managers, restoring Inter to the summit of Italian football after years of mid-table obscurity in just two seasons. Inter led the Serie standings for a significant part of the 2019-20 season, but fell apart in the crucial phases to concede to Juventus.

Conte also won the Premier League crown in the first season with Chelsea, after winning three consecutive titles with Juventus from 2011.
