Former Barcelona forward Lionel Messi’s net worth was estimated at approximately $400 million in 2020 by Forbes. The Argentine footballer is reportedly one of the highest-paid athletes in the world. 

Messi earned a whopping  $130 million in the last 12 months. However, he did not top the list of the highest-paid athletes in 2021 as he was beaten by mixed martial artist Conor McGregor, who is estimated to have made $180 million, according to Forbes. 

A leak of Messi’s FC Barcelona contract in January revealed that he earned up to $165 million annually in salary and incentives, Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported. Additionally, he made up to $33 million through endorsement as per a Forbes report.

The former club captain has partnership with Anheuser Busch InBev, Gatorade, Hard Rock Cafe, Jacob & Co, Ooredoo and Pepsi, along with a 2017 signed lifelong deal with Adidas. 

The 34-year-old launched a clothing line and his first retail outlet in Barcelona, Spain, in 2019. Combining his earnings, Celebrity Net Worth reported that his net worth could approximately be $600 million.

Lionel Messi has lately been in the news as the Argentine footballer is not re-signing with Barcelona. The club’s website stated financial and structural obstacles as the reason for the same. It released a statement and said, “Despite having reached an agreement between Barça and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it will not be possible to formalize due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish LaLiga regulations).”

“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled,” the announcement continued. “FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandizement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.”
