January 16 marks the day when the United States will celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr in 2023. The celebration takes place every year on the Monday closest to his birthday, last year it was celebrated on January 15.

The holiday was signed into a law by then-President Ronald Reagan in 1983, and it was first observed in January 20, 1986. 

“America is a more democratic nation, a more just nation, a more peaceful nation because Martin Luther King Jr became her pre-eminent non-violent commander,” Reagan said in 1983, as he remembered King’s legacy and how it impacted America.

Being a federal holiday, many government agencies, banks and corporate offices will remain close for the day. 

Here’s what remains close and what remains open on this day-

Government Agencies

Nonessential government agencies shall remain closed, including Department of Motor Vehicles, public libraries and city offices. State and Federal houses will also remain closed.

Post Offices and Mailing Services

Federal Express and United Parcel Service will remain open on Monday, in stores and for delivery, but United States Postal Service will be closed, therefore it will not make any regular mail deliveries. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will have modified services. 

Banks

Bank of America, Chase, CitiBank, Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank, will be closed on Monday, though online services and ATM will be available. 

Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ won’t open on Monday. The markets will reopen on Tuesday.

Schools

Most public schools will observe the holiday and give the students a day off. However, one should check with their local school district. 

Restaurants and Grocery Stores

Most big name restraunts coffee shops and grocery stores will remain open, including Applebee’s and Olive Garden.
