Former British finance minister Nigel Lawson passed away on Monday at the age of 91, according to British media. He was among the 20th century’s most influential and longest-serving British chancellors.

Though he played a key role in Margaret Thatcher‘s economic policies, the two split over the European Union.

Nigel Lawson’s wife and children:

Nigel Lawson was married twice and has six children. In 1955, he wed Vanessa Salmon, who would become his first wife. Dominic, Tom, Caroline, and Nigella were their four children together. In 1985, Vanessa, unfortunately, passed away from cancer. Later, in 1986, Lawson wed Therese Maclear, a former model. Together, they have two kids: Emily and Tom.

While Lawson served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1983 to 1989, his support for reduced personal taxes, increased share ownership, and free market economics served as the foundation for Thatcher’s blueprint for Britain. However, in the process, he was held accountable for failing to curb a boom that led to an increase in interest rates and a severe recession.

His last great contribution was serving as a senior leader of the Vote Leave campaign prior to the Brexit referendum. He officially departed from Parliament in December of last year.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak paid homage to Lord Lawson tonight. He said, “One of the first things I did as chancellor was hang a picture of Nigel Lawson above my desk. He was a transformational chancellor and an inspiration to me and many others. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

Former PM Boris Johnson added, “Nigel Lawson was a fearless and original flame of free-market Conservatism. He was a tax-cutter and simplifier who helped transform the economic landscape and helped millions of British people achieve their dreams. He was a prophet of Brexit and a lover of continental Europe. He was a giant. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
