North Korea’s supreme leader and Workers’ Party of Korea’s (WPK) general secretary, Kim Jong Un was seen with his daughter for the first time at the launch of the country’s new Inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) at Pyongyang’s international airport. While it is public knowledge that Kim is married to Ri-Sol Ju, no further official details about his children are available. Thus, Friday’s move has certainly garnered international interest.

The only previous credible evidence about Kim’s next generation was provided in 2013, when basketball star Dennis Rodman visited Kim Jong Un. Rodman, already an outspoken supporter of Kim, had called him an “awesome guy’ and also said, “I held their baby Ju-ae and spoke with Ms Ri Sol-Ju as well. He is a good dad and has a beautiful family”.

The leader was present at the launch of Hwasong -17 ICBM, which is part of North Korea’s “top-priority defense building strategy”. The new missile travelled up to a maximum altitude of 6040.9 km and flew a distance of 999.2 km for 4135s before landing on the preset area in open waters of the east sea of Korea, said KCNA, Korean Central News Agency, North Korea’s state news agency. Kim Jong Un was greeted on the spot by Col. General Jang Chang Ha, leading officials in the national defense scientific research sector and commanding officers of the Red Flag Company, said reports by KCNA.

While speaking on the occasion, Kim said, “Our party and government should clearly demonstrate the strongest will to retaliate the hysteric aggression war drills by the enemies seeking to destroy peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and the region”.
“If the enemies continue to pose threats to the DPRK, frequently introducing nuclear strike means, our party and government will resolutely react to nukes with nuclear weapons and to total confrontation with all-out confrontation,” he added.
Kim Jong Un is the third supreme leader of the country since its establishment in 1948. While Kim’s grandfather Kim 2 Sung was the country’s first leader from 1948 until his death in 1994, his father Kim Jong Il was the leader from 1994 till 2011, when he passed away.
