Kyiv regional police on Friday said that more than 900 bodies had been discovered in the region since Ukrainian forces recaptured it from Russia around a week ago.

Andrii Niebytov, the head of the regional police, told CNN that the bodies had been transferred to various medical institutions for forensic examination.

The police chief went on to say that some bodies, which were recovered from the village of Shevchenko, had been identified: “they were ordinary locals, unfortunately also tortured, and we see that they were shot.”

He added that among those shot, several had white armbands to signal that they were not hostile.

“During the occupation of our cities, the occupiers forced citizens to wear white armbands as if this person had already been checked and was therefore not treated so meticulously. Therefore, in order to save their lives, our citizens wore these bandages themselves to protect themselves from gunshots,” Niebytov explained.

The news from the Kyiv region comes amid mounting reports of Russian atrocities across Ukraine: after the Bucha killings shocked the world, Ukraine also accused Russia of attacking the Kramatorsk train station where a missile strike killed more than 50, including several children.

With international calls for action against Russian war crimes growing, results of forensic examination of the bodies recovered from the Kyiv region may provide further evidence of war crimes and even genocide.

Reports on Friday suggested that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky had urged his American counterpart Joe Biden to consider putting Russia on the list of state sponsors for terror that includes the likes of North Korea, Syria, Iran, and Cuba.
