Real Madrid
manager Zinedine Zidane has tested positive for the coronavirus, the club
confirmed on Friday.

“Real
Madrid CF report that out coach Zinedine Zidane has tested positive for COVID-19,”
the club said in a statement.

Zidane, who
is facing flak for the team’s inconsistent form in recent weeks, will now being a mandatory period of self-isolation.

The Frenchman
becomes the latest in a long list of COVID-hit players and staff for Los
Blancos.

Defender Nacho Fernandes missed the humiliation against Alcoyano after returning
a positive test recently, while striker Luka Jovic, who left Santiago Bernabeu to
return to Eintracht Frankfurt, is another to have contracted the virus.

Eden
Hazard, Casemiro and Eder Militao are among the other star names to have tested
positive for COVID-19.

Zidane
oversaw Los Blancos’ shock 2-1 defeat to third-tier side Alcoyano in the Copa
del Rey, which came on the back of a 2-1 reverse against Athletic Bilbao in the
Spanish Super Cup, with Real Madrid knocked out of both domestic cup competitions
in less than a week.

Real
are winless in three matches, with city rivals Atletico Madrid extending their
lead at the top of La Liga to seven points, having played a game less than Zidane’s
men. They have recorded just one win in five, with the 2-0 win over Celta Vigo
on January 3 sandwiched between draws against Elche and Osasuna.

Madrid are
next in action on January 24, with a trip to Alaves in the La Liga.
