The July supermoon also known as the Buck Moon will be seen on July 13, 2022. The day is also celebrated as Guru Purnima. The lunar body will come closest to Earth at a distance of just 3,57,264 km apart. This will be the smallest gap between the Earth and the Moon in 2022.

The moon is regarded as the Buck Moon not because it has anything to do with the bucks but because it refers to something happening in nature. Old Farmer’s Almanac believes the full moon to be the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer are in full growth during this time.

According to NASA, July 13 will see the biggest supermoon of the year 2022. It will be seen on 12:08 am IST (Thursday)  and 2:38 pm EDT on Wednesday. A supermoon can appear up to seven per cent bigger than an average full moon. It would be 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than a micromoon.

A supermoon is an astronomical event when the moon comes very close to the Earth’s orbit. This coming close of the moon to the Earth is known as perigee. The full Buck Moon will reach the peak of its brightness on July 13 according to NASA. NASA also mentioned that it will be best observed after sunset as it rises into the night sky. The moon will appear for three days from Tuesday morning to early Friday morning.

The supermoon on July 14 was the Strawberry Moon because it’s the full moon at the strawberry harvest. The Moon takes 27.7 days to travel from its closest point to Earth, to its farthest point, and back again.

The next full moon will peak on august 11, 2022. It is known as August’s Sturgeon Moon.
