Gang-related violence has been common in Mexican cities like Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez. After a jail riot between the opposing gangs Los Chapos and Los Mexicles, at least 11 individuals have died this week. At least 10 vehicles were set on fire and there was a significant police response as the violence quickly extended to the streets.

Due to the recent spike in violence, The U.S. Consulate General Tijuana also advised American government personnel to shelter-in-place until further notice. The public was also advised to stay away from the area and find safe cover. The issued advisory also asked anyone in the affected area of Baja California should keep an eye on local media for updates, stay alert of their surroundings, and notify friends and family of their safety.

Where is Tijuana?

On Mexico’s Pacific Coast, in the state of Baja California, is the city of Tijuana. The sixth-largest metro area in Mexico is centred in Tijuana, the second-most populous city in the country. The city is classified as a “High Sufficiency” global metropolis by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network and is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the nation.

The city’s name comes from the rancho that Santiago Argüello Moraga established in 1829 on his Mexican land grant, naming it Rancho Tía Juana. Tijuana is frequently referred to as T.J. in California. The city comes under the municipality of Tijuana.

Tijuana is a significant hub for manufacturing in North America and is home to many facilities for global conglomerates. The city and its sister city San Diego (US), share a border that is nearly 24 km long, making it the most popular border city in the entire globe. Every year, more than 50 million individuals travel between these two cities.

Tijuana has recently grown in importance as a centre of business and immigration for both Mexico and the US. Despite the violence and problems at the border, many visitors from the US, China, Japan, and the southern region of Mexico have visited the city. The city has strengthened its reputation before the world and is now recognised as a competitive place for investment thanks to the realisation of cultural and commercial events.

In order to draw tourists and investors, the commercial and business sector is currently focused on the growth of the gourmet industry, craft beer, entertainment and real estate, as well as medical tourism.

Due to high medical costs in the US, many Americans visit the city for affordable healthcare. Every year, Tijuana welcomes 2.5 million medical tourists. Every day, about 300,000 people travel from San Ysidro to the United States on foot or by car. Many of the city’s tourist attractions are within walking distance of the border, including restaurants, taco stands, pharmacies, bars, dance clubs, and stores and booths offering Mexican crafts and mementos.
